Hatua Likoni launched its University Mentoring Program on the 9th of August at The Mombasa Yacht Club. The goal of our mentoring program is to provide one-on-one career guidance to our college & university students. While education is key, academic credentials alone will not ensure that our students are able to transition into the work force. A successful transition requires the right networks through which to seek opportunities. For this reasons we are pairing each of our college & university students with an accomplished professional working in the field our student aims to pursue as a career.
Mentors are tasked with helping their mentees meet and network with professionals in their industry and apply for internships. Our hope is that mentors and mentees will meet at least three times per year throughout college or university, and continue until the mentee has transitioned into the workforce.
Our first mentor orientation was a great success with 90% of invited mentors attending. All were enthusiastic about the programs goals, and have generously offered to serve as volunteers, donating their time and expertise to our students.
“It was really amazing meeting likeminded people whose passion is to help the less fortunate in the society” said Peter Kwame, Programs Director of Hatua Likoni. “I was humbled by their gesture, and I am looking forward to a stronger partnership with each mentor.”
We are grateful to our mentors and to the Mombasa Yacht Club for hosting our event. We look forward to meeting our newest mentors at our second mentor orientation on Nov 15th and to our day of fun and games with all mentors and mentees at the Mombasa Yacht Club on Jan 4th.
