One… Two… Three! * Screams * Splash!
It was a day of celebration. Hatua Likoni’s gap year students were being rewarded for their outstanding scores on their Kenyan Certificates of Secondary Education (KCSE). 83% of Hatua Likoni students passed with a C+ and above; nationally, only 27% of students got a C+ and above.
It was also a day to push one’s limits. Some of the students had never swum before. Gabrielle Fondiller and Peter Kwame, co-founders of Hatua Likoni, along with other life-long swimmers, gave lessons on treading, floating, and kicking. Fears were overcome and many students surprised themselves by how quickly they were swimming. By the end of the morning, races had been swam, cannonballs perfected, and Marco-polo played by all.
Now we’re waiting to hear from the Joint Admission Board to see which universities and which courses our students will be called to take later
this year. In
the meantime, the students have each other and the cool water to keep them company.
