What would you do if money were no object? Travel the world and help the needy- ensure access to healthcare for all and that every child has access to education.
Did you always know you wanted to work in the non-profit field? No, but now that I’m in it I think it’s the best field and I cannot imagine doing anything else.
What field did you want to work in? The entertainment industry.
Favorite Program you’ve done with Hatua: Taking these kids to school; giving them an education is something that will impact their lives in a totally different way. That in itself is my favorite.
As for specific events…
The Likoni Free Medical Camp 2013- Seeing the families. They’re poor. They cannot afford good medical care. They cannot afford to go to clinics, to get treatment. The medical camp was totally free. There was medicine, doctors to inspect them. To see the old mama’s I see selling on the road near the office getting medical attention was fulfilling. I wish we could have given them total treatment, a cure. We gave them what we could. Some had chronic diseases. We’re looking in the future to bring in more doctors, maybe foreigners, and more experts in the field.
I also really enjoy civic education. The general election takes place at the national and local level every five years. After each election, there has been very bad violence, expect for this past election when Hatua was very involved in passing out a message of peace. Our peace awareness campaign engaged youth and informed the community on how to vote. Likoni had no violence after the election while other parts of Mombasa were tense. I’m not crediting Hatua alone,
we had other partners we worked with. It was exciting to be apart of the movement and change towards peace.
