Fair, open,
gender-balanced scholarships based
on merit and need.
We begin by conducting direct outreach in public primary schools across Mombasa to invite students to participate in our competitive and transparent scholarship application process. We then assess each application for academic performance and financial need to identify high potential students who would otherwise drop out of school after Class 8 (8th grade).
On average our selected students come from families with a total household income of under $3 per day, shared across an average of 5.5 family members. While the international poverty line is $1.90 per person per day, our students' families average just over 50 cents per person per day. Despite these hardships, they have excelled in their primary education, averaging among the top 10% of students nationwide.
Once selected we assist our students to enroll in top-performing boarding schools and cater for their school fees, uniforms, books, and other essential supplies. We then monitor our students’ performance each term and organize peer study groups during school holidays. When we notice a downward trend in any student’s performance we organize individualized support including counseling to help promote their success.
When our students successfully complete secondary school we continue to support their education through college or university. We begin by coaching our students through Kenya’s public tertiary application process to help ensure they enroll in courses that align with their career goals. We then provide support for their fees, room & board. Throughout their tertiary education, we track our students’ academic progress and provide access to ongoing psychosocial support.
Our program supports girls and boys in equal numbers in order to promote equity and inclusion, while also addressing the gender-specific challenges faced by our youth.
