Big Success for Hatua Likoni’s April Mentoring and Career Week

Whom do you owe your success to? In everyday life, each human looks up to someone, either for guidance, motivation or emotional support. In order to achieve success through education, students ought to not only rely on individual effort but support from an experienced professional mentor/coach as well. Hatua Likoni tries to act as a bridge in helping youth realize the need of having a mentor in the pursuit for success and excellence.

Every adult understands the challenges that teenagers undergo during puberty and adolescence, it is a period of uncertainty and erratic decision making. Stop and think about yourself in your 14 or sweet sixteen days, I am sure every grown up can count one through hundred of ups and downs!

This year, Hatua Likoni dedicated 10 days to mentoring and career skills’ awareness in the April mentoring. At the core of the forums, students learned self discovery, explored about different careers and participated in sessions to match careers with interests, passion and personality.

Forms 1s’ underwent an orientation about Hatua Likoni and all the programs run by the organization. The “freshmen” in high school attended training sessions on Hatua Values as they shared on their experiences for the first term in high school. Thanks to Boniface Kimunyi, our Secondary Mentoring Coordinator for the psycho-socio support to the first formers, it is common to experience culture shock in High School and we try to help the young ones to adapt.

Our value system incorporates Resourcefulness, Service to others, Integrity, Teamwork and Respect. Through mentoring, we instill these values to our beneficiaries to help them be of help to the society and communities they live in.

The attendance for this year’s mentoring was impressive; we recorded 89% participation by our students. Hatua Likoni also invited practicing professionals, Hatua Likoni Alumni and Hatua University Scholarship beneficiaries in various fields to shed light on their areas of their expertise. The aim of inviting the various participants was to help secondary students understand in a broader perspective the aspects of a career journey.

The Career Fair was segmented into different categories based on the professional mentors who attended, they included:

• Medicine
• Business
• Engineering and IT
• Education, Arts and Social Sciences

Students, in their feedback assessment were happy to note that they had better knowledge on different careers; at the same time they were able to understand how to translate their passion and personality into effective careers.

Generally, Hatua aims at disrupting the traditional way of accessing opportunities by creating a systems change in society through promoting individual and collective impact of our beneficiaries, together with linkages to successful professionals in the community.

In the long term, once the students are successful in their careers, they will serve as professional focal points to the future generation of students in the community in terms of mentoring and connections. We captivate them from the formative years by exposing them to the realities and expectations of a skilled workforce, we believe this will always proof impactful to future generations!
