During our Sunday mentoring classes, Hatua students were given an opportunity to watch a YouTube video produced by KTN media titled, ‘The Last to Graduate’
‘The Last to Graduate’ is a short film about the poor school performance of students in the Coast province of Kenya. Hatua students were given a chance to share their views about the video. They all agreed that one factor alone cannot be the cause of poor school performance. Some said that some parents are often illiterate and therefore don’t understand the importance of education. If a parent doesn’t stress the importance of education, it is much more likely that their children will feel the same way, and eventually drop out of school or only attend for exams.
On the other hand, teachers are often overwhelmed due to overcrowding in schools. Teachers are less likely to give students personalized attention, and it is hard to hold students accountable when they are catering to so many in one classroom.
This and other factors, such as extreme poverty in areas like Likoni, lead to poor performance of our students. Through Scholarships and mentoring that Hatua students receive, they believe that they can improve their educational performance. Because they have learnt the importance of education and have a bright future ahead of them.
