As a shift from traditional philanthropy, Africa Visionary Fellowship (AVF) initiative was designed by Segal Family Foundation in order to build capacity, offer mentorship, technical support and an exposure to donor spaces for African leaders driving change within their communities. Our Co-founder and Programs Director, Peter Kwame is privileged to be among the 15 selected for the 2nd cohort of the fellowship.
In the year 2006, touched by the levels of poverty in Likoni, Peter Kwame together with Gabi Fondiller made a decision to start an Education Scholarship as a way of giving back to society. With no skills in fundraising, Gabi and Kwame went door to door using bicycles visiting companies in Mombasa with an aim of raising funds to help children remain in school and gain a meaningful education. Often, their efforts were fruitless but that did not deter them from pushing on.
A lot has changed since then, Hatua Likoni now supports 400 students in Secondary School and University, with 34 alumni already working or on a paid internship. Kwame’s selection to the African Visionary Fellowship comes at a critical moment when Hatua is poised to scale up. Within the year, Hatua plans to open a second branch that will expand Hatua’s support into a new community in Mombasa. At the same time, we are pushing the bounds of our program to engage our alumni as a source of career information for youth throughout our communities.
The 2-year fellowship program will provide mentorship, coaching and networking opportunities that will help to accelerate Hatua’s growth. Participants will meet 3 times per year, starting from May 2018 and expected to end in October of 2019. During the second year of the fellowship, Kwame will have an opportunity to mentor first years in the next cohort as a way of deepening collaboration among Segal partners.
Hatua sincerely wishes Kwame the very best as he embarks on the 2-year journey at the African Visionary Fellowship. Many thanks to Segal Family Foundation for the continued support towards creating a lasting impact in the community. Hongera sana Kwame!
