How Mentorship Helped Mwanaidi Start a Youth Group

Only in her first year of college, Mwanaidi Hamisi is surely becoming a force to reckon with. She already is the chairperson of Mtongwe Youth Alliance, a youth group she started in 2019 with the help of her mentor, Mahmoud Noor, founder of Swahili Pot Hub.

“I started a youth group to help reduce drug abuse among teens in that [Mtongwe] area and create awareness about how harmful drugs are,” Mwanaidi says. “We also engage in activities such as beach cleanups, visiting orphanages, and donating to charities.”

When the group started thinking about sustainability and how they could earn money, they pitched their business idea to Swahili Pot Hub. “Mahmoud liked our idea and supported us in finding a well-wisher who gave us Ksh.50,000 to set up our chicken business,” Mwanaidi says.

Mwanaidi’s proactivity led to her being a panelist during the launch of the Mombasa Entrepreneurship Resource Center for Youth (MERCY) held in December 2021. The Resource Center acts as a one-stop shop for youth that provides them with all kinds of information to support them in their entrepreneurial journey.

During the launch, Mwanaidi and other youth founders shared their experiences as founders of successful businesses and projects: “I felt very happy to be part of the panelist representing youths engaging in Agribusiness and entrepreneurship. It was something I never expected could happen.”

Mwanaidi Hamisi is one of our tertiary students currently in her first year of college at Thika Technical Training Institute. Having a mentor at this early stage has equipped Mwanaidi with a solid foundation on which to build her career. If you would like to become a Hatua mentor, sign up here.
