Each year the community in Likoni get to benefit from voluntary services from our exceptionally excelling gap year students as they wait to join the university. The team of gap year students volunteering in our library, commit their time not only to serve the students but also help them whenever they’re stuck! Students especially those waiting to sit for national exams have found this program to be a unique golden opportunity.
How the matrix work
Library users at our community library don’t go home with the disturbance of a concept or question they couldn’t figure out or understand. If any of the students using the library has a challenging question, they’re encouraged to raise it with the team of library assistants. More than 50 gap year and university students volunteer in this program. Any question asked by the users is given a topical approach. Using revision materials available at the library the volunteers then cover as many questions in the particular topic. The highest recorded number of the question by an individual 730 per day.Mathematics, Chemistry and biology record the highest number of questions across the year. For instance, on August 8th recorded 2830 questions for Mathematics 470 for Chemistry and 60 for Biology.
When asked about their source motivation, Salim’s answer was very clear. “Respecting the trust given to us by the management, working together as a team to serve everybody without favor and promptly helping our users to solve challenges through our homework helpers program.” Before the 4 were selected to join the library team, a thorough vetting process was undertaken. They were taken through an orientation process plus basic library management skills training.
Salim is in charge of homework helpers and documentary show, Abdul-Jabbar is in charge of storytelling and Non-curriculum books record keeping. Anastasia is in charge of library hours and library usage statistics. Rukia is in charge of curriculum book usage statistics and library orientation. Thanks to the mentoring department, they have also undergone a soft skills training equipping them with leadership, communication, time management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. We believe great skills with good values make up exceptional leaders like Salim, Anastasia, Abdul-Jabbar, and Rukia.
