As a Hatua alum, I became a mentor because I understand how important it is. I was paired with Eric Ngugi, a marine engineering student who was in his second year of university. Since then I have been proud to watch him grow. He reminds me of myself as a student all those years ago. He asks questions and is eager to learn more about the profession. We even had the opportunity to work together during his attachment at the Kenya Ferry Services.

Over the last decade have interacted with many Hatua students at my school, which is how I learned about their mentoring program. I was later paired with my mentee, Mtama Mwambega, a computer science student in Mombasa. So far, it has been fulfilling being her mentor. There is so much I'm learning even as I share what I know about my field.

I am a proud mentor to two Hatua students, Adan Mohammed who already graduated, and Brian Siari who is still in university. As a mentor I play two roles, I am a role model as well as a parent to my mentees. My experience as a mentor has been fulfilling because it reminds me of my duty to care for others. I'm able to give back by filling in a gap for young people who need advice but have no one to consult. I also help connect them to training opportunities.
