For three days a year, our college and university students pack their bags and head home for our Annual Students Camp. With students scattered all over the country, the Camp presents a rare opportunity to meet all of them in person, bond, and learn together.
This year 223 students made their way to Bombolulu Workshop for the 2½ day event which began on 29th August. After the morning dust had settled, breakfast was served, staff introductions were made, and Day 1 of Camp kicked off in earnest.
Goal-setting: Where do you see yourself tomorrow?
Students were split into groups according to their industry segments. We then asked students to visualize their future years from now: Where would they like to work, and what skills would they need to get there? Later in the afternoon students tested their problem-solving, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills through fun, interactive games.
Day 2: Online & Offline Introductions
On the second day of camp, students learned about the importance of networks and professional brands, and how to use them proactively in their careers. After studying a few examples, they were tasked with creating their first professional profiles on LinkedIn and adding new connections within their camp industry groups. In the afternoon, students left the comfort of their phone screens and notebooks to engage in role-play sessions on in-person networking techniques.
Day 3: Discussions and an Award ceremony
As mentors arrived, we hosted a morning panel session with some of our alums discussing the camp’s theme on proactivity in their careers. Even with the rain making an unexpected appearance, we were glad to have our mentors join us for mid-afternoon industry group discussions sharing career-related tips and answering questions from our student community.
We’re immensely grateful to everyone who helped make this camp a success: our students, members of our team who made the camp possible, and mentors who volunteered their time to sit down with the next generation of professionals in Mombasa. Asanteni!
